Using the AI Tool Use Continuum

This guide is intended to help students and educators accurately reflect on and document the role of AI in academic work. Before submitting assignments that involved AI tools, students should identify the appropriate level on the AI Use Continuum and provide clear documentation of their process. This includes noting the specific tools and prompts used, describing the extent of AI involvement, and offering a brief rationale for how AI contributed to the final product. By following this process, students demonstrate ownership of their learning, ensure transparency, and uphold the ethical standards expected within the Hamilton School District.

Key Terms

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more integrated into educational settings, it is essential that students and educators engage with AI tools responsibly, ethically, and reflectively. The following terms provide a foundation for understanding and evaluating the appropriate use of AI in academic work:

  • Academic Integrity  refers to acting with honesty, responsibility, and fairness in the completion of schoolwork. It involves producing one’s own work, giving proper credit when using others’ ideas, and avoiding cheating or plagiarism. Academic integrity ensures that all students are held to the same expectations and that learning is achieved through genuine effort.
  • Explainability is the ability of a student or teacher to clearly articulate what role AI played in the learning process. This includes explaining what was generated by AI, what was revised or retained, and why those decisions were made. Explainability demonstrates understanding and ownership of the final product.
  • Fidelity refers to how well the use of AI aligns with the district’s instructional goals, learning standards, and core educational values. High fidelity means AI is being used to support—rather than substitute—intentional teaching and authentic student learning.
  • Transparency is the practice of clearly and honestly disclosing how AI tools were used in the creation or refinement of academic work. This includes naming the AI tool, describing the prompts or inputs used, and identifying any changes made based on the AI’s suggestions. Hamilton School District AI Attribution Guidelines

Ethical Guidelines

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into student learning offers new opportunities for creativity, efficiency, and support. However, with these opportunities comes the responsibility to use AI in ways that uphold the values of academic integrity, fairness, and responsible digital citizenship.

The ethical guidelines outlined below are designed to help students make informed decisions about when and how to use AI tools. These principles ensure that AI enhances the learning process without compromising the expectations for originality, honesty, and equity in academic work.

Students are expected to understand and follow these guidelines whenever AI is used in the development of an academic product. Doing so protects the integrity of the learning experience and aligns with the Hamilton School District’s commitment to fostering independent thinking, digital responsibility, and ethical conduct.

  • Attribution: Always credit AI tools used in your work (e.g., specify the tool and prompt in a footnote or appendix).

  • Integrity: Do not use AI to complete work you are expected to do independently (e.g., avoid AI-generated content for unapproved assignments).

  • Accuracy: Verify AI-generated content for factual correctness and bias before submission.

  • Privacy: Avoid inputting personal or sensitive data into AI tools.

  • Learning: Use AI as a learning aid, not a replacement, to maintain skill development.

  • Disclosure: Report any AI assistance to teachers, adhering to the transparency requirements of each continuum level.
